The Relationship.

  “And the spirit of God hovered over the face of the deep” Genesis 1:2. 

     The face of the deep mentioned in Genesis 1:2 represents the place where the spirit of God moved. The event was so climatic that Genesis placed the event at the beginning of the beginning. All things to come after have been possible only because of this event, and this event is the catalyst for all things to come. This event allows for the story to begin.

     The immediate recognition of water’s existence at the beginning of Genesis verifies the importance of water. But simple recognition of water’s existence was not enough. Genesis wanted to demonstrate the importance of water with certainty. Genesis wanted to demonstrate the value of water in the creation story, prioritizing telling the listener about the relationship between God and water before any other relationship. The first and most important relationship by all measures.
