The Beginning.
1:1 In the beginning, god created the heavens and the earth.
1:2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
Let’s unpack.
Although water does exist at the beginning, Genesis does not describe God creating water. Genesis clearly describes the creation of the heavens and the earth; water, somehow, was already in existence. Water was the first property that God interacted with, cementing water’s description of importance in Genesis.
The heavens and earth’s priority is clear. They make up the backdrop and frame for the story. Water was the third property described, but Genesis does not note water’s creation. Water shares a high priority status with the heavens and earth because of their proximity to each other initially.
